History and Development

The land on which Camden Valley Golf Resort now stands was originally part of a large property owned by the McArthur family. In 1856, the land was subdivided and sold to various buyers. One of these buyers was William Dargan, who later became one of Ireland’s most famous railway builders.

In 1865, Dargan sold the land to Sir Robert Peel, a British politician and former Prime Minister. Peel used the property as a country retreat and named it Camden Park, after his ancestral home in England.

In 1879, Peel died, and the property was bought by Sir Daniel Cooper, another British politician. Cooper renamed the property Ingleby Estate after his family home in Yorkshire, England. Cooper held onto the property for almost 20 years before selling it in 1898 to a syndicate of investors led by Sir John Sulman, a Sydney-based architect and politician.

Sulman’s group planned to develop the property into a country club and residential estate. However, these plans never came to fruition, and the property was sold again in 1906 to George Wade, an English businessman.

Wade also had grand plans for the property, but like Sulman, he was unable to make them a reality. In 1911, Wade sold the property to Frederick Darvall, who renamed it Camden Park Estate.

Darvall began developing the property immediately, building a number of homes as well as a golf course. The golf course was designed by world-renowned golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. and opened for play in December of that year.
