The WILD PLAY Garden has been officially named the best play space in Australia and is located in Sydney’s Centennial Parklands. This innovative and natural play space was designed to encourage kids to get outside and explore their wild side through a series of unique play elements that draw inspiration from the Australian bush. It was honored for its creative approach to child learning and engagement, which was designed to engage the senses while reconnecting children with nature.

The garden was made possible by a .5 million donation from the Ian Potter Foundation, one of Australia’s largest private philanthropic foundations, which aims to enhance the lives of young Australians. The state-of-the-art, purpose-built nature play environment provides an outdoor experience for kids and families of all abilities and backgrounds. The first of its kind in New South Wales, the Wild Play Garden is an exciting new addition to the already world-class Centennial Parklands. The garden is designed to promote outdoor active play, exploration, and risk-taking in a safe and fun environment. It also encourages children to use their imaginations and develop their own unique play experiences.

The garden was built by a team of landscape architects, horticulturists, and play experts. Construction began in 2016 and was completed in 2017. The design team took inspiration from the work of internationally renowned American landscape architect and theorist, Mollie Dyer. Dyer’s philosophy was based on the idea that children learn best through direct experience with their natural surroundings. The Wild Play Garden is located within the existing grounds of Centennial Parklands, next to the WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo.

The garden provides an opportunity for kids to explore, play and learn in a natural environment. The design of the space encourages risk-taking and allows children to use their imaginations to create their own unique play experiences. The Wild Play Garden is also a great place for families to spend time together and bond over shared outdoor activities.
